It belongs to the group of medicines called other combinations with antacids. It works in two different ways:
1. Sodium alginate together with baking soda (hydrogencarbonate). and calcium carbonate form a protective barrier in the stomach to prevent gastric reflux by soothing burning in the stomach mouth.
2. Sodium bicarbonate (hydrogencarbonate) and calcium carbonate further neutralize excess acid in the stomach. Gaviscon is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of stomach hyperacidity and burning caused by acid reflux of the stomach.
