Description
ACTION AND DESCRIPTION

It is an annual herbaceous of 10-50 cm in height, with a large vertical rhizome. The stem is rounded and branched. The leaves are trifoliate and with short petiole, 0.5-2 cm. The leaflets are 1–3 cm long and obtuse deltoid in shape. It has long, membranous, oval and pubescent stypules. The flowers come out of the underarms of the leaves in pairs or solitary. They have a length of 0.8-1.8 cm. Chalice is a membranous tube. The petals are pale yellow or violet, and usually measure twice as much as sepals. The wings are half as long as the banner, while the keel is rounded, obtuse and almost the size of the sepals. The fruit is a linear and pubescent sheath, with a size of 2.5-10 cm in length and 0.5-1 cm wide.
4-20 seeds appear on each fruit. These seeds are rectangular or rhomboid, with rounded edges and very hard, brown to reddish brown. They are divided into two unequal halves by a groove on one of their faces.
They have an intense aromatic and characteristic smell. They swell when put into water.
Fenugreek has bitter compounds that stimulate taste buds, producing a reflected release of saliva and gastrointestinal juices, and leading to appetite stimulation.
It has been proven in in vivo trials on rat and diabetic dog that fenugreek is able to decrease postprandial blood glucose.
In human clinical trials, an improvement in blood glucose control has been shown, with significant reduction in postprandial blood glucose levels and decreased insulin resistance. The effects could be due to an interaction in oral glucose absorption by mucilages, by increasing the viscosity of the intestinal content.

Contraindications

Situations where gastrointestinal transit is difficult or impeded, such as intestinal obstruction, intestinal obstruction, even abdominal pain of unknown origin.

Fenugreek can mask a more severe picture, delaying its diagnosis.

Fenugreek can aggravate gastrointestinal obstruction.

Fenugreek can aggravate appendicitis due to its mechanical laxative effects.
Blood glucose values should be monitored in diabetic patients during treatment, as decreased oral glucose absorption may enhance the effects of antidiabetics and cause hypoglycaemia.
